On November 8th, Oakland Voted to Pass the Soda Tax
On November 8th, Oakland voters said Yes on Measure HH to stop letting big soda put profits above our children's health. Measure HH will tax distributors of soda and other sugary drinks that have direct links to obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart and liver disease.
Simply put, this tax works—and now Oakland can be a part of the progress.
FOR OUR CHILDREN'S HEALTH
With current consumption of sugary drinks, 1 in 3 children will develop diabetes in their lifetime. For African American and Latino children, that number jumps to 1 out of every 2 children.
Requiring distributors of sodas and other sugary drinks to pay a penny per ounce fee on high calorie beverages will raise money for community programs that promote health and nutrition across our city.
Measure HH will reduce the consumption of high-sugar drinks, while exempting non-sugary drinks like diet sodas, milks, and naturally sweetened beverages.
PAID FOR BY MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG
The measure has been endorsed by 150 organizations, businesses, and elected officals so far.
